Before becoming one of your patients, I was always fearful to dental treatment. My nervous state was so bad that I now refer to my previous visits to the dentist as being akin to a strong laxative!   One of my worst fears was related to injections in the mouth and I would particularly like to compliment you on your injection technique. This is absolutely pain free and the process is hardly noticed by the patient.   I now feel really confident as a patient and I elected to have fillings replaced in order to have cosmetic treatment to whiten my teeth. “careful and considerate treatment”   Will I ever conquer my fear of the dentist? Probably not, but here are a few tips to making it a bit easier.   First find a dentist who is sympathetic to your fear, fortunately in Mr. Winston I have. Due to his kindness, careful and considerate treatment my visits are now not quite so traumatic. I still have butterflies, shake like a leaf and gabble on but at least I get there twice, sometimes three times a year. I don’t have a full set of teeth but the ones I have I intend to keep as long as possible. I cannot conquer my fear of the hygienist but thanks to Mr. Winston’s care and almost painless injections my teeth are cleaned and polished.   I have a few tips on getting to the dentist, always have the first appointment, that way I can’t change my mind. On the journey say to myself, in an hour’s time it will all be over and I can go and treat myself to something. “I can now smile with confidence”   I sat in the chair at the Granby House dental practice waiting with mixed feelings of apprehension and excitement. My new bridge was being fitted. I was confident I was getting the best treatment possible, but how was this decision to have a bridge, instead of the partial denture I had for forty plus years, going to affect my life? Were my teeth going to look anything like my original ones? Was it going to suit me? Was it going to be difficult to get used to? Surely I wouldn’t regret getting rid of this ‘disgusting object’ namely a partial denture. Was there a problem anyway- if I was too upset, then surely it wasn’t too late to going back to having a partial denture? Without doubt this would out weigh having a spare denture in my handbag in case the one in my mouth broke whilst eating, as in my case, had happened on more than one occasion!   At this stage my thoughts were interrupted as John Winston handed me a mirror and with his usual confidence told me to take a look. Wow! Was this really what my mixed thoughts had been about? I looked in the mirror and thought ‘yes girl you are forgiven at last for that foul with the hockey stick all those years ago.’   What a pity this standard of cosmetic dentistry wasn’t available forty years earlier, but thank goodness it arrived in time for me to enjoy the benefits now. I can enjoy the full flavour when eating and no longer worry whether people notice my teeth. I can now smile with confidence, believing they are thinking the same as I am thinking, ‘what lovely teeth!’   My questions were answered. It has affected my life – in the best possible way. My teeth now look better then my original teeth. They do suit me.   It took me a few days to get used to them. I had problems with hot drinks and crispy food in the root of my mouth.
